IIJS today has developed in a brand by becoming
one of the key factors catalyzing the growth of
Indian Gem & Jewellery Industry. It is one of
the most ideal destinations for networking and sourcing
the widest variety of products.
The
shows success is borne by the fact that IIJS today
is the fifth largest trade show in the world marking
presence of 28611 visitors out of which 2438 is
overseas visitors, 740 exhibitors and 1581 stalls.
Besides
individual overseas exhibitors, National Pavilion
from Thailand, Dubai, Belgium, Italy etc. formed
an impressive part of IIJS 2007
Keeping
in mind, the GJEPC’s drive to innovate and
exceed the usual, the visual theme for this year’s
IIJS was – ‘Origami and Illusions’.
The graphics, the design of the venue, stalls
and seminar halls all reflected the theme. The
IIJS 2007 was designed to surprise, delight and
grab attention at every turn … and
grab attention it did!! What with 1581 stalls,
done
up in finery design and the eye-catching motion
visuals, the GJEPC ensured that the Gem and
Jewellery
business at the IIJS, 2007 was done in the environment
it truly deserves.
The
GJEPC went all out in its efforts to offer the
patrons
of IIJS 2007, a great … and truly world
class
show.
As
the IIJS 2007 kicks off, it is worth looking at
some of the rapid changes taking place in India.
Speaking at the inauguration function, Mr Ashwani
Kumar said, ”The
Indian Gem and Jewellery Industry, having achieved
great prominence globally in diamond cutting
is facing the challenge of not only preserving the
market share, but actually growing its value component
and the brand equity of the ‘Made in India’ label.” He
called on the industry to look inward and develop
the huge domestic market. He announced that
his Ministry
would consider the prospect of developing a
convention
centre for Mumbai. The Minister commended the
remarkable
achievement of setting up the IIJS-2007, in a
city
such as Mumbai where space is a luxury. The IIJS
2007 covered 50,000 Sq. mts. of exhibition space.
Mr.
Sanjay Kothari, Chairman, GJEPC, said, “The
Gems and Jewellery industry is in dire need of
support such as fund availability at low interest
rates and compensation to cover losses, as a consequence
of the rupee appreciation and withdrawal of the
GSP”. Mr. Kothari also
expressed that the GJEPC in line with its new
strategy, is making inroads into new emerging
markets and is establishing India’s ability
to supply niche
segments such as high-end Jewellery to the luxury
segment.
IIJS
2007 - Beyond Expectation!
The
IIJS 2007 saw a staggering amount of visitors, which
more than exceeded the expected number of 25,000
visitors. There was record number of pre registrations
that touched the figure of 17000.
Mr.
Kamal Nath, Minister of Commerce and Industry had
this to say about the IIJS 2007 – “Gems
and Jewellery are one of the most important components
of India’s export basket. They have really
established Brand India on global canvas. It is
heartening to note that the Gem & Jewellery
Export Promotion Council is organising the 24th
edition of the trade fair- IIJS 2007 in Mumbai.
The GJEPC’s consistent efforts
have helped in establishing IIJS as a premium
international
show”
The
IIJS has been incredible in terms of networking
and generating business. All across the board exhibitors
said they had bulging order books from clients all
over India & overseas markets including the
Middle East, Eastern Europe and CIS nations.
The
IIJS has become the benchmark show for the entire
Indian Gems and Jewellery Industry, not to mention,
quite a trendsetter! With a strong rupee and continuing
economic growth, the Indian market is now extremely
interesting for even overseas Jewellery industry
players – manufactures,
retailers, equipment makers and allied service
providers
all eagerly want to do business in India. The IIJS
provides the best gateway into the country for
them.
The IIJS today is the fifth largest trade show
in the world, with a higher ranking if the watch
industry
components are taken out of the picture.
With
demand growing for newer and more global Jewellery
set with diamonds and coloured gemstones, Indian
retailers have found that the IIJS is the place
with the widest selection of the latest trends
and
most innovative products.

EVENTS
AT IIJS 2007
Shri
Subbirami Reddy, Hon’ble Minister of State
for Mines, Govt. of India addressed the Press at
a gathering. He said - “The new Mining
policy announced by the GoI will be without any
red tapism, translating to automatic mining lease
from one stage to another. The new Mining policy
can transfer the lease to another company who is
more proficient in the next stage of Mining”.
The
minister emphasized that it was his intention
to
remove all delays in the processing of mining permits
required in the country. His endeavor is to ensure
that production is maximized in as short a time
as possible. In this regard, he is working with
the
State Governments to ensure that the Union-State
Intergovernmental procedural delays do not hold
up any mining projects.
Solitaire
Design Awards 2007
This
year’s awards ceremony attracted some of the
finest design talent from across the country. Over
50 companies presented an astounding array of nearly
300 entries for the competition. The theme this
year was ‘India’ with 3 categories
• India Traditional
• India Global
• India Futuristic
These
categories were further divided into ‘Couture’ and ‘Pret’.
The Solitaire Design Awards were set up to encourage
and showcase India Jewellery Design talent. The
awards have spawned some of the industry’s
most exciting
new talent as well as brought to light the innovation
and creative genius that exists in India, and
has hitherto gone unrecognized. The awards ceremony
was presided over by Indian Minister of State for
Mines, T. Subbirami Reddy and attended by top officials
from awards sponsor, ABN AMRO Bank and international
delegates.
Some
of the winners in the cateogaries were Sama, B.N
Jewellers, Royal Chains, Fine Jewellery (India)
Ltd, Jewels Emporium, PRA-MAK, and DiaMande.
The
Mind’s Eye – The IIJS Fashion Show
The
highlight of the IIJS every year, the Fashion show
at the 2007 show too, engaged the audience in an
enthralling display of some of the most beautifully
designed and crafted Jewellery, worn by India’s
top models. The theme of the show was decided
keeping in mind the almost surreal splendor of
gems such as diamonds and rubies. The theme encapsulated
fantasy and a spell binding reality in the display,
lighting and visuals of the show.
The
Fashion Show was divided into three sections: Reflections,
Illusions and Search.
Reflections
featured top-end diamond Jewellery, Illusions presented
gold and colored gemstone Jewellery and Search showcased
a range of silver Jewellery.
Goa’s Ex-Chief
Minister Mr. Pratapsinh Rane, accompanied by his
family, was the Chief Guest at the evening function.
The General Manager, State Bank of India, Anuradha
Thakur was the guest of honour and she said “We
are proud to be associated with the Gem and Jewellery
Export Promotion Council (GJEPC) and I congratulate
them for arranging such a grand event.” The
Jewellery was sponsored by Sama,
A star Jewellery, Auro Gold, CVM Exports, Gaja,
Silvex images Derewala and Eros.

Conclusion
of the IIJS 2007:
The
IIJS 2007 was an incredibly successful event, beyond
all expectations of the organizers, the visitors
and the media. While the show management was looking
at a total footfall count of around 25,000, the
actual
response to the Show has been so overwhelming that
this figure was crossed on the 3rd day itself! The
IIJS has been a resounding success not only in terms
of design or creatuve talent, but also in the business
it ended up generating.
The
visitors and the exhibitors were highly impressed
with the organization, the logistics, the people
management and the business environment at the IIJS
2007.
